New way to Apply for the Green Awards in the Dioceses of Huron for 2012

Greening Sacred Spaces recognizes the commitment that has been shown by the parishes of the Diocese of Huron and has chosen us to do a pilot study here. This year you will be able to apply for your Green “ACCREDITATION” Award on-line. With the Green Awards of the Dioceses of Huron as a basis Greening Sacred Spaces has developed their on-line version.

To cover some of the administration costs of this program, Greening Sacred Spaces is needing to charge a small administrative fee of $50 for the first year and $25 thereafter. During the pilot phase, Huron parishes will only need to pay $25.

The Canadian Interfaith Call for Leadership and Action on Climate Change asks the Canadian federal government to take specific action against climate change at the UN conference in Durban, South Africa (COP17), Nov. 28 to Dec. 9.

Archbishop Fred Hiltz, Primate, has joined 25 other faith leaders in issuing their first united call for climate justice.

The Canadian statement has already been praised by the World Council of Churches (WCC) Programme Executive on Climate Change, Dr. Guillermo Kerber.

Interfaith Call for Leadership and Action on climate Change

On Sunday October 23 to Monday October 24, faith leaders, politicians and church members gathered in Ottawa to engage in gatherings and dialogue on climate change. A letter was prepared by church leaders associated with the Canadian Council of Churches. This is the most proliferate interfaith call to date concerning climate change.

The Anglican Communion Environmental Network (ACEN) met on Aug. 4 to 10 in Lima, Peru. Canadian participant Revd. Ken Grey noted that "ACEN representatives from Argentina, Brazil, Madagascar and Peru described how deforestation and associated environmental degradation continue at a frightening and devastating rate, often at the expense of indigenous communities who have undertaken subsistence farming for centuries". After this meeting Revd. Gray, chair of Greening Anglican Spaces of the Anglican Church of Canada, declared that "Creation is in crisis. Anglicans must act".

Not only did participants learn of on the ground degradation of the environment in South America but saw to it that a plan be put forth to deal with it. ACEN convener Bishop George Browning of the Anglican Church of Australia heralded a call to "scrutinise and transform our own relationship with God’s creation". ACEN says that by September 2011 they will have an action plan for worldwide Anglican environmental advocacy.

Wildlands League asks Ontario Government to start land use planning in Northern Ontario 'Ring of Fire'

The Wildlands League and Noront Resources Ltd. are jointly requesting that the Ontario government start land use planning with First Nations communities located in the northern Ontario Ring of Fire.

"In a letter addressed to various government ministers, the public interest group Wildlands League and Canadian mining company Noront highlight the "urgent need" to develop and approve compressive land use plans that will protect First Nations' land while preventing delays and missteps for mining companies developing in the area.

"What First Nations communities need to see is the options available to them and the cost and benefits of those options," said Anna Baggio the director of conservation and land use planning at Wildlands League.

Land use agreements are part of the government's Far North Act, which aims to protect 50 per cent of Northern land (225,000 kilometres) from development while providing stability for mining companies exploring and developing in Northern Ontario. Baggio said land use agreements with First Nations communities and should have been implemented last fall when the Far North Act was initially passed.

Following the election of a federal Conservative majority government, 53 of B.C.'s Faith Leaders stress the importance of provincial action on climate change.

May 9, 2011.

(Vancouver) Faith leaders from across the province have come together to stress the importance of caring for creation and fighting climate change. On May 9, an open letter was sent to Premier Clark and NDP leader Adrian Dix, urging them to work toward "mitigating the damage already done to the natural world," and to "provide citizens with a new vision of relationship with the earth."

"That there was almost no mention of climate change or environmental protection during the federal election campaign is deeply troubling," comments Susan Draper, KAIROS BC-Yukon Network Coordinator. "This failure to acknowledge or even recognize our intricate and dependent relationship with the earth has placed this province and our country at the crossroads. Because the federal government has not taken significant action on climate change and environmental protection, it is even more important that our Provincial government assumes more leadership on this critical issue. Concrete actions to reduce energy consumption as well as initiatives such as carbon taxes, the banning of fuel tankers from our coastal waters, and the Western Climate Initiative are important steps our provincial leaders can take to help us transition to a different way of living on this planet."

"These are issues that threatens the health, safety, and quality of life for future generations," says Rev. Ken Gray of the Church of the Advent, an Anglican church in Victoria and one of the letter's signatories. "In many cases, the desire for profit has led us to put short term human needs ahead of all other values and all other beings that share this planet with us. The consequences are obvious: the impacts of global warming caused by humanity's burning of fossil fuels are increasingly visible and threatening much of what we know and love about this beautiful province."

e) Design an inter-generational educational/study hour or environmental event

Seniors, toddlers and everyone in between can participate in any one (or a few!) centres designed to engage, teach and inspire people about environmental issues. Centre leaders can be members of your congregation, or invited speakers/facilitators from local environmental groups (see ‘Resources’, below). Some of the ideas mentioned in sections a), b), c) and d) can be incorporated into your centres.

Some centre ideas could be:

Outdoor ideas:

• A nature walk in the neighbourhood surrounding your faith community (this could also be done in a park or natural area close to your building)
• Book the Yellow Fish program (see ‘Resources’, below)
• Organize a litter pick-up on your property, or in the vicinity around your faith community’s property
• Start or continue a gardening project at your faith community, or in your neighbourhood

Indoor ideas:

• Story hour: featuring books from your faith community’s library, or your local library (book suggestions: The Lorax (Dr. Seuss), Dear children of the earth: a letter from home (Schim Schimmel); search your library collection for ‘environment’, ‘environmental protection’, ‘ecology’
• Music – choose music that celebrates the earth
• Eco-craft – choose crafts that have a seasonal theme (such as planting beans), use natural materials (eg. pinecones, branches, rocks), or recycled materials; design signs for your faith community’s building, such as ‘please turn off the lights when you leave this room’ (to be placed by each light switch), posters instructing what to/what not to compost (to be placed on the wall in the kitchen, and on the compost collection container)
• Environmental games – ask the camp counsellors in your youth group (or former camp counsellors!) to lead community-building, cooperative or nature-themed games
• If people in your faith community are part of a green bin/organic collection program, teach them how to fold green bin liners out of newspapers (see www.region.waterloo.on.ca/waste and click on ‘green bin’)
• A snack (featuring locally-made or seasonal foods...)

"The Partners in Mission and Eco-justice (PIMEJ) of General Synod will launch a national database this year to provide information on eco-friendly and energy-efficient Canadian Anglican parishes, including how they became green. It is hoped that sharing their stories will help other parishes to do the same.

Rev'd Katherine Loynd, rector of Trinity Church St. Thomas, sent the following prayer that Bishop Terry Dance prayed when he dedicated their programmable thermostats. Digital thermostats help reduce a church's heating and air conditioning needs at times when their not necessary. On Sunday February 6th, 2011 Bishop Terry prayed:

Creator God, in the beginning you created all things; the sun and the sky, the waters and the dry lands, the plants and the animals; and you entrusted human beings with the stewardship of your creation. In our time, we have become aware of the need to care for your creation with greater diligence; to be mindful of the needs of others with whom we share this fragile earth our island home and of the generations to come. With the installation of new programmable thermostats, Trinity Church has taken one small step towards reducing our carbon footprint. We ask your blessing upon these thermostats, that they may assist in the conservation of energy; keeping us ever mindful of our commitment to be good stewards of the resources you have provided; in the name of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Such prayers of dedication are the keystones of our conservation. Thank you Rev'd Loynd and Bishop Terry.

Heritage Trust Ontario Approves St James Stratford's Roofing Project

Dave Sheldon and the property committee of St. James Anglican Church in Stratford is leading the way in terms of environmentally friendly options for heritage churches. Mr. Sheldon reports that convincing Heritage Trust Ontario of alternative greening options was challenging but worth it. Mr. Sheldon says that when they recently reroofed the parish hall they "used Enviroshake composite shakes instead of the original cedar shakes". The composite shakes are an endurable product made mostly from a combination of recycled rubber, plastic and fibrous materials and manufactured in Chatham.

Obviously, Mr. Sheldon is a great pitchman for greener ways of maintaining Anglican heritage churches.He also says that "This is now the first heritage building in Ontario to use a composite roofing material and this is something we are quite proud of". As you can see in the pictures the 'shakes' blend very well with the trees and property itself. It is this kind of environmental leadership by the Anglican church which is helping to make sure that greener alternatives will become the norm in the future. This environmental roof is aesthetically popular as well.

Mr. Sheldon says "I think that the roof looks so much like aged cedar that it's worth doing even on a heritage building". This practice was a win-win situation, not only was it ecologically safe but it kept the original integrity of the building.

Dr. Mishka Lysack, assistant professor at the University of Calgary and Anglican priest brought together leaders of many different faiths in an ecumenical event in Calgary. The conference in April 2010 examined the issue ‘Climate Change as a moral issue’. Four events are planned in Toronto in November 2010. An Ottawa event is planned as well.

Dr. Lysack wrote “given the severity of today's environmental issues, simply changing your personal lifestyle isn't enough. That would have been enough if we had listened to David Suzuki talk about it in the ‘80s, but our world is too far gone now. Today, we need to focus on public engagement, education and community building”

London's Anglican Garden Project Update

The garden is now completed for the season and was very successful in the produce that was harvested. There were eight city churches involved in the weeding and watering of the garden during a very hot summer.
The churches involved were St. John the Evangelist, Church of St. Jude, St. Aidan's, Bishop Cronyn Memorial, St. Luke's Broughdale, St. John The Divine in Arva, St. Martin-in the-Field and St. Stephen's Memorial. Thank you to all those churches and particularly to St. Aidan's who I think had the hottest and driest week of the summer but did a commendable job.
The vegetables that were grown were lettuce, tomatoes, broccoli Swiss chard, cabbage (both green and red), beans, etc. The dinner program at St. John's benefited from lots and lots of lettuce for tossed salads with some broccoli, red cabbage and tomatoes.
The Friendship Centre at the Cathedral that provides healthy soup and sandwiches to about 200 hungry people daily benefited from the bushels and bushels of other vegetables from the garden.
Our very special "Thank You" to Murray Hunter who planted the garden in the spring and took produce to St. John's and the Friendship Centre all summer and then harvested the remaining vegetables in the fall. He and Rev. Don Ford hosted a delicious appreciation dinner for the helpers on October 15th at St. John the Evangelist Church.
Thank you for all your hard work and hopefully this program helped to fill an empty tummy or two these last few months.

Please allow me to introduce to you the Anglican Garden Project. Beginning in Brough Deanery, this project will grow food this year for the St. Paul's Cathedral lunch programme.

Not only are people, churches and groups responding with letters of support and making visits to MPs to correct misinformation, but they are also making donations to KAIROS’ work. Most recently we received a legacy gift from the congregation of the former Deer Park United Church.

These generous donations enabled KAIROS to provide small one-year solidarity grants to its Global partners and to carry on its work with Indigenous communities at home, its network of volunteer local committees across Canada and with civil society partners working on ecological justice and human rights. However, in order to implement a Global Partnerships Program, the government must change its position.

Dear Bishop

This letter is to let you know about Greening Anglican Spaces, an important initiative of the Anglican Church of Canada, and to ask your help in forming a diocesan “green team” to provide local leadership and support for the initiative. If your diocese has already formed such a group, we commend you for your leadership and invite your participation and support.

Greening Anglican Spaces, a project of the Partners in Mission and Ecojustice Committee, developed to implement General Synod Resolution C001 adopted in 2007, calling upon all Anglican churches in every diocese to set targets for reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

A project team has been creating on-line tools – soon to be posted on the Anglican web page - to help parishes and dioceses increase the energy efficiency of our buildings, lessen greenhouse gases, save energy dollars, and together work towards a more sustainable future.
The Anglican Church of Canada is collaborating with the Greening Sacred Spaces project of Faith and the Common Good to develop educational materials and practical tools to help parishes in their greening efforts. A schedule of this joint project is attached.

Achieving increased energy efficiency in our buildings and changing our practices is a multi-year process. With your help, we believe we can support our parishes in serious greening efforts over the next three to five years, sending a clear signal to the wider community that Anglicans are serious about seeking a healthy, sustainable future. Specifically, we are asking you to name up to three people in your diocese who care about climate change, and who are interested in the practical aspects of reducing the church’s carbon footprint. Or to let us know what diocesan activities and teams you may already have in place. Kindly forward their name, e-mail address, telephone number and other contact information to mmaybee@national.anglican.ca. A reply by December 4, 2009 would be appreciated. One of the members of our project team will be in touch with you soon to follow up.

Greening Anglican Spaces is a practical response to the Fifth Mark of Mission, “To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation, and sustain and renew the life of the earth.” Last month, participants at an interfaith meeting hosted by the Archbishop of Canterbury pledged to take whatever action they can “to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable practice”. Taking action continues to be urgent, whatever the results of the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit, and that is what this initiative proposes to do.

*Kairos says that “350 parts per million (ppm) is the upper limit for carbon dioxide (CO2) concentration in our atmosphere. Until about 200 years ago, our atmosphere contained 275 ppm of CO2, but now the concentration stands at 390 ppm. Unless we are able to rapidly reduce, we risk irreversible impacts on all of Creation”

Call to Anglicans in Canada for Vision and Action on the Climate Crisis

We, the undersigned, as Canadian Anglicans, call on our primate, bishops, clergy, and laity to address climate change as stewards of God’s good creation, required to act justly towards our fellow creatures and to Earth itself.

We are deeply concerned at:
* Increasingly urgent warnings on the need for substantial, swift greenhouse gas emission reductions, warnings issued by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change since 1990 and widely ignored;
* Canada’s being the world’s worst per capita emitter, with increasing emissions flouting its Kyoto Protocol commitment to a 6% reduction from 1990 levels;
* The federal government’s failure to establish targets or a plan of emissions reductions, as the scientific consensus indicates, of 25-40% from 1990 levels by 2020 and 80% by 2050, in order to avoid an average global temperature increase of more than 2 degrees Celsius, after which runaway crises can be expected;
* The inadequacy of provincial targets and reduction plans -- despite responsible policies in some provinces -- given that the harmful impacts of global heating are occurring faster than anticipated, making deeper, faster reductions necessary;
* Promotion by Canadian tax subsidies of tar sands extraction, the major cause for rising emissions and of massive pollution and water depletion, water itself being a critical environmental issue;
* Failure to recognize that fossil fuels are a non-renewable resource fast being depleted;
* The lack of requirement in our Constitution and other statutes for responsible use and conservation of these valuable one-time riches for future generations;
* Failure to include military operations, a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, in reduction planning;
* The substantial carbon and other greenhouse gas emissions from Canadian agricultural practices and other industries;
* Failure to take adequate advantage of well developed knowledge and technology for alternative fuels and for more efficient planning of cities and transportation systems, industrial European countries being more advanced in curbing emissions and committing to serious further reductions;
* Climate-change induced harm to developing countries and the far north in Canada, and the devastation of First Nations’ lands by the tar sands extraction.

We call on Anglicans to work for solutions to the climate crisis. In our liturgy, we confess that “we have sinned against God by what we have done and by what we have left undone,” yet, with blind eye and hardened heart, we do not “love our neighbours as ourselves.” Climate change is the slavery issue of our day: we in the developed world are the oppressors in a system that victimizes the Earth, our neighbours in the global South, and future generations. We fail to act as partners in the Covenant with God to care for this planet, and to live out the transformative love of our resurrection hope.

It’s time for new vision and commitment to a new kind of life, to renewed care of the land on which we live as tenants, to deeper respect for all the creatures within the Covenant, for the mountains and hills that sing, the trees and rivers that clap their hands.

Time is urgent. At the December 2009 Copenhagen Convention on post-Kyoto reduction targets, we need Canada to be a voice for the serious cuts deemed necessary by the best science.

We call on the Anglican Church to join with environmental organizations and other faith communities in urging the Government of Canada to make the effective, timely commitments needed. We call on church leaders to take these concerns to all levels of government.

We ask Anglicans to support a national call for climate change action by signing the KyotoPlus petition. Sign it on line at http://www.kairoscanada.org/en/get-involved/campaign/kyotoplus-petition, and download it at http://www.kyotoplus.ca/en/index.html.

We call on all levels of the church to set an example by making cuts in greenhouse gas emissions in our own operations. We urge routine incorporation of the care of creation and the responsibility for environmental justice in prayers, readings, and sermons.

Who is my neighbour? The command to “love one another” embraces people far away and future generations. The command to stewardship embraces the whole Earth, our
island home, and all life dependent on it.

Reducing Climate Change in the Third World

Climate change affects the Third World much greater than the First World. In September 2009 the Church of England created the Climate Justice Fund to help remedy this imbalance and reduce the negative impact of climate change where it is most needed. Churches can find out what they can do to help Third World parishes at the website http://www.climatejusticefund.org/. It will take you through the following steps. Firstly, a church calculates their carbon footprint; measuring the causes of the church’s greenhouse gas emissions. Then the amount of emissions is reasonably converted into a financial equivalent which is donated by means of the aid agency Tearfund. The money is said to go directly toward problems caused by climate change such as flooding. This can help a church use a carbon offset to reduce their Carbon Footprint at home while recognizing that climate change is a problem of global proportions.

The vitality of our Diocesan Family is seen in so many ways in the congregations and parishes of Huron. Our commitment to be good stewards of God’s creation has been claimed as a priority of ministry by the members of our diocesan EnviroAction Committee.

Care for the world in which we live was named as a key component of our ministry and Christian witness during the discussions at the Lambeth Conference in 2008. Stewardship of creation is one of the Millennium Development Goals. The EnviroAction Committee’s goal is to nurture and facilitate the turning of those global goals into practical challenges that can be addressed and resolved right here in Huron in our own parishes, homes and communities.

The Diocesan Council endorsed the ‘Green Awards’ in 2008. The “Green Awards’ have been developed by the EnviroAction Committee and will provide all in the Diocese of Huron with a means by which we can make decisions regarding the care of our buildings and review the way in which we order the life of congregations, so that our carbon footprint will be reduced.

As you read through the different sections of the EnviroAction portion of our Diocesan website we hope that you will discover ideas which have the potential to re-shape your sensitivity to the world in which you live. Mission Statement of the EnviroAction Committee

Calling the people of the Diocese of Huron to be good stewards of God’s Created order; The EnviroAction committee will be the Diocesan focus:

1. Reviewing our current environmental practices
2. Affirming our environmental responsibility in ministry
3. Educate about environmental issues
4. Proposing policy options that enable and encourage us to be faithful in caring for God’s creation.

Five Marks of Mission

The Five Marks of Mission are a work in progress that continues to be reviewed and adapted, while offering the Anglican Communion a practical checklist for mission work and a comprehensive view of Christ’s Mission.

They are:
1. To proclaim the Good News of the Kingdom
2. To teach, baptize and nurture new believers
3. To respond to human need by loving service
4. To seek to transform unjust structures of society
5. To strive to safeguard the integrity of creation and sustain and renew the life of the earth.

A friendly new face for the EnviroAction Committee to provide resources and assistance for churches. As well, for Anglicans and Anglican churches to help us out if they wish. So how do we begin? Let us know. While you are thinking about that we will put up photos and files that will provide a face lift to our resources.
